Small Business Sector Part of Federally Funded CASCADE Project
As defense contracting resources shrink and the need for cybersecurity grows, California businesses need assistance finding and utilizing other resources in the region.
Two Small Business Sector projects are among those funded by a $2.9 million Department of Defense grant aimed at improving California’s cybersecurity supply chain.
The California Advanced Supply Chain Analysis and Diversification Effort (CASCADE) is a two-year project that includes:
Supply chain mapping
Labor market and skills gap analysis
Cybersecurity provider surveys
Cybersecurity workshops and assessments
Workforce development projects
Innovation vouchers for small businesses
The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) is coordinating the effort along with numerous partners from government, business, and academia.
The Small Business Sector will serve as the lead on a Contract Diversification Program aimed at helping small businesses learn about all aspects of contracting from procurement through proposal development and project execution. Content will be presented in nine online modules hosted by Coastline Community College.
The sector will also coordinate regional supply chain workshops facilitated by the Deputy Sector Navigators across the state. The workshops will convene California Community College education resource providers and small businesses to identify the workforce and business development related needs of these businesses and provide potential solutions to those needs.
Work on these projects began in August and will continue through 2019. These efforts are two small pieces of a larger plan to cement California’s standing as a cybersecurity leader.
“The CASCADE program enables California companies and workers to tap into one of the fastest growing and diverse industry sectors in our state – cybersecurity,” said GO-Biz Director Panorea Avdis. “We will provide resources that will help them develop greater insight about procurement, entrepreneurship and labor opportunities in the sector. In addition, CASCADE will empower our defense industry business and people employed in the industry to enhance and diversify their skill sets and opportunities within cybersecurity.”
